Calculation methods
NEC 2023 — Article 220.12 (School occupancy)
- General lighting at
3.0 VA/ft²from Table220.12for schools/university. - Receptacles per
220.14(I): 180 VA each, then demand factors from220.44. - Demand per
220.42: first 12,500 VA at 100%, remainder at 50%. - Kitchen / cafeteria equipment per
220.56: demand factors from Table 220.56 (65%–100% by count). - HVAC per
220.60: largest motor + 25% plus others at nameplate. - Service SPD mandatory at all new services per
230.67.
CEC 2024 — Rule 8-204 (Schools)
- Classroom load =
50 VA/m² × Classroom GFA. - Gymnasium =
30 VA/m². - Kitchen / cafeteria =
100 VA/m²+ nameplate equipment. - HVAC = calculated separately per system nameplate.
- Demand factor =
0.80applied to aggregate load per Rule8-204(3). - Total = (Classroom + Gym + Kitchen) × 0.80 + HVAC at full.
Tenant Fit-Out mode. When a project is flagged
project_type = TENANT_FIT (single floor or wing on an existing service), EEP excludes common-area loads (central HVAC, corridor lighting, parking) — they remain on the landlord/campus service.
What EEP automates for education
- Per-space load build-up with classroom / gym / cafeteria / lab tagging — demand factor selected automatically.
- Lab branch sizing for science classrooms with fume-hood motors, lab gas/water valves, and emergency stops.
- Auditorium / theatre lighting with dimmer racks, house light separation, and emergency egress.
- Athletic facilities — gymnasium high-bay, swimming-pool bonding (Section 26), scoreboard feeds.
- Server / IDF / MDF closets with dedicated 20A circuits, UPS feeds, and HVAC interlock.
- Emergency & egress lighting per NEC
700/ CEC46on a separate panel and inverter or generator.
